Get this key open that door, get that other key to open that door so you can get yet another key to open yet another door. No challenging puzzles at all.
BORING BORING BORING.
Playing with the physics engine was kinda fun for a bit but the novelty wears off after a while. This must be the first “adventure” game that i leave unfinished.
What can i say.
They tried to make a horror action adventure game and they failed horribly in all 3 aspects of it.
There’s only sooo many spiders you can squish with a hammer before you start to ponder the meaning of life. It’s a shame coz the engine offers a lot of potential for some very interesting puzzles but…
This is the first (excluding scratches which i wouldnt call a game) adventure game i touched for a very long time.
The brief review:
The story is interesting but not very well incorporated into the game.
The graphics are awesome.
The engine is amazing.
The puzzles were great even though some were very hard. (upgrading security card to lelel 8 clearance was pure brain damage.)
The long and boring review:
The story :
Set in the paris of the future, where an evul dictator is using “the holly mission” and some other religious crap to keep people in check, the hero (a broke ass artist who cant even pay his rent) gets sucked into a conspiracy involving Anubis and some other egyptian gods, a floating pyramid, a rotten election, an underground religous group and a robot that wants to kill his father.
The environment is very well built and you get the feeling that the writer was trying to generate.
Ah yes the author…
Enki Bilal wrote what seems to be an amazing story in the Nikopol trilogy (comic books i ll be sure to check out). Unfortunately the game does little to present the characters and the story but I am sure the comic books hold much more interest than the game itself in that respect.
Favourite lol moment was when two security guards are talking about the upcoming election which was the first election that had more than one candidate.
“An election with two candidates? I can’t see how that could work”
“Weird times indeed”
Graphics
Awesome! Nuff said. Congrats to both the author and the graphics artists.
Style style and style.
Cutscenes were amazing too.
Only downside was the model of Anubis but it’s ok i was never a big fan anyways.
From painting the portrait to redirecting the flow of power to get the train lines going.
From reconfiguring data cards to decoding encrypted messages using the setup of stones and symbols in the ritual room.
All fucking amazing.
(Had to use walkthrough to get the lvl 8 clearance card after trying to solve it for 2 hours).
Only downside as far as gameplay is concerned is that you can die if you make the wrong move.
But it’s ok
So… How can a game that when broken down into pieces seem amazing seem so mediocre as a whole?
No fuckin idea.
Personally I fucking love it!
But … it is not a great game. Not still life. Not myst. Not phantasmagoria. Not Syberia. Not not not :p
It’s a poor adaptation of a great graphic novel with some very nice puzzles, great graphics, awesome gameplay, amazing cutscenes but nothing to tie them all together and make it feel like a complete game.
Edit: Currently working on a speedrun for it I ve done half the game in 17 minutes. Looks like the whole thing might take about 40-50 minutes since there’s a lot of dialogue in there that you can’t skip. Normal gameplay took about 8-10 hours but most of it was spent banging my head against the wall trying to figure out some of the brilliant puzzles. Not too good but not too bad either.
